Osnovna šola Benedikt is a small school situated in the north-eastern part of Slovenia. It has got 268 students aged 6 to 15. It is a compulsory school. In Slovenia, primary and lower secondary education are unified and last for nine years. It is divided into three 3-year cycles. Our school is in the area that is one of the most underdeveloped areas in Slovenia. There are a lot of depriving factors for our students, such as unemployed, divorced or uneducated parents and our area is poor with little opportunities for young people, which is all leading to financial problems at the end. We have also got quite a lot of students with special needs. We have well developed social net meaning that we try to recognise and help the students who need special care or attention.
The education system in Slovenia is almost fully financed from the state budget; a small share of the finance is also contributed by local authorities.
